Do It On Youtube
In the past it was different. Without official employment, great talents were buried. Hence, being employed was very important. A great actor who couldn't make it to Nollywood or Hollywood was likely to end up undiscovered and the talent untapped. Village champions were really village champions and were more likely to end up as village champions even if they had the capacity to compete outside the village.
The painful thing is that some people are still living today as if it were yesterday. They are yet to discover the change that has happened and to leverage it. Some people claim they are great writers but have not been able to write because they have not found a job that gives them the opportunity to write. Some graduates believe they are experts in their field but couldn't make progress because of a lack of employment.
What the internet did for Nigerian comedians could be replicated in any other field. The world has changed and you must change. For the first time in history, you can truly be all you want to be and easily make a global impact. If you can sing and you know it, you should never waste the talent undiscovered and unutilized. You can sing it on YouTube! Yes, just doing a cover for popular music can give you the type of money, most employment won't give you.
Are you a greater writer? Start writing! If you're a great cock, start cooking on YouTube. If you're a great actor, start acting on YouTube. I don't mean YouTube in the literal sense of it but any popular online platform. The world is looking for experts and there are various places you could be found but definitely not in your house. The internet is a community that does not limit anyone and doesn't discriminate against color, race, or even location. From your house, you can be heard loud and clear. If you develop a great game and put it on the App Store, the whole world is likely to play it.
If you're hungry for success, dare to become an expert on something. That expertise could be sold over the internet, no matter which field you chose. Start seeing the internet as a tool and start leveraging the tool to excel. There are platforms where you could make money as a graphics designer, an artist, or a painter. You can write a great novel and sell it over the internet. Your book can be read from all parts of the world. What is your area of expertise? Even if you're employed, you have to develop expertise in something even if it is not your core area of employment.
I am always happy to see how Nigerian comedians are making a living from the internet. So many people who would have never made it to the limelight are watched today from every part of the world. Imagine, 'Ikorodu boys', and so many others becoming global figures right from their villages. What is your excuse? If someone comes to you to employ you in your area of expertise, what exactly will you be very confident to offer? David became a reliable and committed champion in the bush. One day, he had the privilege to play in the stadium, and he displayed the skill that has been talked about for many years.
If there is nothing you could confidently say, you could do it. Find one, even if it is preparing Egusi soup. Become an expert in it, and find a way to do it on YouTube. I mean on the internet. If you're a teacher, go and start teaching those difficult topics on YouTube.
'Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean men.' (Proverbs 22:29).
