Before You Become A Pastor

Before You Become A Pastor

Have you ever imagined what is the noblest of all jobs? For me, I think it is a job that gives you the opportunity to not only contribute meaningfully to the physical and mental well-being of people but also to their spiritual well-being and eternal security. Being a Pastor is one of those jobs (when it is well understood and practiced).

I remembered how I passionately desired to be a full-time pastor as a teenager. This desire is obviously not peculiar to me, many Christians at different points in their life have sincerely thought of going into full-time ministry as a way of committing themselves fully to the work of God and some also do so because they see pastors as one of the most influential people in the society.

Then I thought I had what it takes, but today with a better understanding of the enormity of Pastors' work and responsibilities, I see being a Pastor as one of the most difficult and tasking jobs in the world. It is quite unfortunate that so many don't realize this even after they have become one. And this explains why some people use the Pastor's title to exploit others, they simply don't know what the calling is and what it means for God to entrust the fate of many to your hands.

So before you become one, think through it and understand what it truly means, what is involved, and be sure you're not driven by the flesh. When you fail as a Christian the impact is low, but when you fail as a Pastor so many lives are most likely going to go down with you.

Maybe, you need to consider these scriptures. They are not written for Pastors alone but for all Christians. However, Pastors and aspiring ones should never be ignorant of them. One of the things you should know is that the calling is not about you, it is about the Master and His purpose on earth.

Luke 17:2 'It would be better for them to be thrown into the sea with a millstone tied around their neck than to cause one of these little ones to stumble.'

Mathew 16:24 "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.'

Luke 14:26 "If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters--yes, even their own life--such a person cannot be my disciple.'

James 3:1 'Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.'

Today, I still love to be a Pastor. Despite the challenges and enormity of the job, working for the Lord brings a fulfillment that no other job in the world can bring. And when you're sincere about your desire, He stands by your side, helps your weakness, guides you to the truth, and helps you succeed. Remember, 'Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,' says the LORD Almighty'.

Pastor Cheer up!
